Bridal Name Change Procedures & Services
When can I start my name change?
The name change process can begin after your marriage, once you receive your original Certificate of Marriage, or Record of Solemnization of Marriage.
How long does the name change process take?
It can take brides anywhere from 2 days to 2 years+ to finish all of their name changes. Some brides who start the name change paperwork never fully complete it, or discover something they forgot to change months or even years later.
Once you have processed the updates, your new I.D. generally arrives in your mailbox between 2-10 weeks later. |
Is my information secure with your In-Person Service?
We do volunteer work for the Police, therefore have Police clearance and are bondable.
A number of precautions are also taken, including:
* compliance with the Privacy Law (PIPEDA)
* personal information is never stored on a computer
* your information is stored in a locked cabinet
* premises are protected by a monitored security alarm system
* any forms required for the name change process, that are no longer needed, are destroyed using a cross cut shredder
* payments by credit card are not accepted from your cellular phone, as there's a chance it can be scanned
* if paying by credit card on a cordless phone, you are asked to change frequency a few times during our conversation (for the same reason as above) |
What do I require in order to change my name?
That depends on what document you are changing. Each company and Government agency has their own criteria.
Where do I have to go?
That also depends on which document you are changing and their individual criteria.
Can I just change some of my documents?
To avoid confusion, we recommend that you update all of your records.
If you are booking an airline ticket, be sure the name on the ticket corresponds with the name in your Passport. |
If I hyphenate my name (maiden and married names), do I have to go through the name change paperwork?
Yes. You must update all your Government and personal documents in order to maintain consistency throughout.
Do I have to legally change my last name?
No. Brides may assume their spouses last name and use it as a result of marriage.
Can I legally change my last name to my spouses?
Yes, you can elect to legally change your last name under the Change of Name Act. Information and application forms are available by contacting the Office of the Registrar General. Fees are charged if the request is made more than 90 days after the marriage. Additional fees ae also applied to update some of your Government I.D.
What are some of the most common items to be changed?
Outside of Government I.D. such as Driver's Licence, Health Card/Organ Tissue Donation, Social Insurance, Passport and CRA (Revenue Canada), other items include: financial institutions, credit cards, points cards, investments, household expenses, medical professionals, employer, memberships, lawyer and accountant.
